Mayport Naval Station Baseball 1943

According to Loyd’s notes this was shot on Sanders Field at Mayport Naval Station in 1943 during the time he was stationed there as a Navy photographer.  The fielding team has Gibbs on their jersey. I can’t read the base runners.

This looks like the early 1960’s judging from the swim suits and the hair.  Among the competitors for the title of Miss Duval County were Miss Beach News, Miss Putt Putt Golf, Miss Sun Discount City, Miss Pic N’ Save and Miss Sea Side Drive-in.

The more I look at this photograph the more I am intrigued  by it.  Is it a 50’s vintage team building exercise?  First aid drill?  Prank?  I’m sure there is a good story to go with it unfortunately Loyd did not leave any clues.
