Ringside Action

More Women’s Wrestling action by photographer Loyd Sandgren shot in the arena located at Main Street and Beaver Street.  The details of the crowd, seen better in the enlargement below are fascinating.  The men’s straw hats, cigarettes being smoked.  Then there is something about the guy sitting in the right of the frame with the mustache […]

On Dating A Professional Wrestler

This is not the best image technically from Loyd Sandgren’s professional wrestling images but the note Loyd attached to the original print was too good not to share. “Here was one girl throwing another one like she was light as a feather.  Names I don’t remember but I sure remember the fights.  They were good […]

Beach Photo Shoot

Undated photo shoot at the beach.  The photographer looks like Virgil Deane working with a 4×5 Speed Graphic camera and a flash while an assistant holds a second flash to help fill in the harsh midday sun shadows on his subjects.

Summer School At The Beaches?

This is another of photographer Virgil Deane’s images showing a classroom at one of the schools at Jacksonville’s beaches in what appears to be a warmer than usual day judging by the open jalousie windows and the relaxed dress code.  None of the photographs I have of Virgil Deane’s work have any caption information so if you […]

Landon Lionettes, 1949

“Here is a photo of the Landon Lionetts at the Gator Bowl in 1949.  It was one of the most precise marching groups that I have ever seen.  They had a great reputation all over the South.  They would stretch out 90 yards of the field.”  LS Landon High School opened in 1927 and served […]

Swimsuit Model With Floor Prop

A swimsuit model photographed with an odd organic form floor decoration from the late 1940’s or early 1950’s when Loyd Sandgren was working for the C.H. Brown Camera Store.  It was probably shot for an advertisement and the image of the model and prop would have been cut out and reproduced against a white background […]

Costume Party At The Little Theatre

A costume ball for The Little Theatre in San Marco.  According to the note left behind by Loyd Sandgren the photograph was taken around 1949 and the party theme was famous people. Mahatma Gandhi does not look all that thrilled to be there but Pan has his flute and seems ready to party.

Young Love

One of the more playful images from the box of Virgil Deane’s photographs that I received. Seemed appropriate for a Valentine’s Day post.  Anyone at Jacksonville’s beaches know the identity of these young and somewhat reluctant models?

Bride and Groom?

This is one of the more unusual photographs found in Loyd Sandgren’s collection of wedding photos.  I can only speculate that this is the new bride with her groom who is playing dress up for the amusement of the rest of the family.  If that is not it, then this was not the classic Ozzie and […]

San Marco Film Shoot

There is no information about what was being filmed but it looks to me like a production shoot, perhaps some type of commercial, late 1940’s or early 1950’s. According to the 1949 Jacksonville City directory the Harry P. Davis Service Station was located at 2045 Hendricks Avenue, just before the San Marco intersection with Atlantic […]
