Putting In

12:40H

“Mrs. Lou Bono putting on the green.  Lou is on the far right.  He is the one that started Lou Bono’s Bar-B-Q.  The other man was the pro around town and of course with his wife.” LS

Frozen Iceburg

17:34H

“This is something that you can’t see today.  This shows the inside of a freight-car, and refrigerated, that is they would put ice on the food products.  These were boxes of Prize Winner Lettuce, all damaged when the train humped (or was bumped) and damaged all this lettuce.  I took the picture for the insurance company.  1948.” LS

Busted

12:30H

“This man as you can see was arrested on a charge of murder (three people).  I don’t remember what his sentence was, but it was either one or two lifetimes.  The names of the two detectives is unknown to me.  About 1953.” LS

Those were some sharp dressed detectives!

(Update:  Former JSO officer Lonnie Miller Jr. did a little research for Vintage Jacksonville and his contacts believe that the Detective on the left is Willie Weston.  We will add additional information as it comes in.  Thanks Lonnie!)

Under The Sea

13:27H

“Here is a window display at Cohen Brothers in the St. James Building on West Duval Street.  I thought this was a very effective display, it looked like it was under water.  50’s.” LS

I’ve looked at thousands of Loyd’s prints and have many favorites but this one is just a classic.  It is a beautifully surreal night scene with the reflection of a street light globe in the window.  It is also an amazingly soft sell approach to advertising.  More art than commerce.  For those of you that may not know, the St. James Building now serves as Jacksonville’s City Hall building.

Jacksonville’s Speed Racer

12:30H

“This photo is of Peter Gregg, auto racer of Jacksonville.  He had just started his dealership on Philips Highway and was being interviewed on radio.” LS

Legendary Jacksonville race car driver Peter Gregg (third from right) became the owner of Brumos Porsche after purchasing the dealership in 1965 following previous owner Hubert Brundage’s death in a motorcycle crash.  In 1968 Gregg acquired the Mercedes-Benz of Jacksonville dealership which was renamed Peter H Gregg, Inc. and later changed to Gregg Motorcars.

(Thanks to Patti Tantillo with Brumos Racing for providing a succinct timeline of Brumos’ history in Jacksonville.)

New And Improved

11:30H

On December 28, 1886 a patent was issued to Josephine Garis Chochrane from Shelbyville, Illinois  for what is considered the first practical mechanical dish washing machine. It was displayed at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair but saw use mostly in commercial settings.  It was not until the late 1940’s that a home model came on the scene.  Cochrane’s original company is now a part of Whirlpool Corporation.

Mr. Abood And His Meat

11:03H

An obviously proud Mr. Abood with a batch of award winning sides of beef which according to the ribbons hanging from each carcass, were purchased at the Ocala Fat Steer Show. 1950’s.

This photo was circulated among members of Jacksonville’s Syrian community and they think it may be Fred Abood of the “Steer Room” and the “Green Derby” restaurants in Jacksonville.   If anyone has any additional information I would welcome your input.

US Royal Tire Showroom

11:53H

No information is attached to this photo but judging from the advertising for the New Mid-Century U.S. Royal Master line of tires I think it would be safe to date the photo from about 1950.

Making Way For Progress

16:01H

Looking at the corner of Bay Street (to the right) and Liberty Street (to the left) with fencing up prior to the demolition of this block of buildings to make way for the current Police Memorial Building which was conceived in 1967 when Jacksonville Mayor Lou Ritter called for an architect’s competition to design a new Police Headquarters Building..  The corner building was part of the New York Laundry complex.  The building to the left is the original building with a sign on the facade saying Established 1883.  At the end of the building on Bay Street are three bail bond businesses, American Dixie, Bill Arflin and Crews Bail Bonds capped off by Dean’s Bar on the corner. The old Duval County Jail had been across Bay Street from this location.

Below is another view of the New York Laundry building from the intersection of Forsyth Street and Liberty Street  As some things changed downtown one constant still remains.  The demolition was being handled by Burkhalter Wrecking, Inc., still very much in business today.

These images were scanned from contact prints made from 8 inch by 10 inch negatives shot by Loyd Sandgren.

WFGA Color Television

14:22H

Jacksonville television station WFGA began broadcasting September 1, 1957 and was the first TV station in the country designed for color broadcasting.  It was also a pioneer with the first “live camera” coverage of space launches at the Kennedy Space Center in 1958 and acted as the designated pool feed for all national TV networks. The station now broadcasts as WTLV.

Anyone recognize the group on stage?
