Montgomery Ward Grand Opening

“Here is the opening of the new Wards Store at Normandy Mall. It was a high school band playing but I don’t remember which.” LS It must have been quite the big deal. The Montgomery Ward opening was preceded by Jacksonville’s first three malls, the Gateway Center in 1958, the Philips Highway Plaza in 1960 […]

The Many Incarnations of 1037 Park Street

Show in this 1950’s image with the single longest running tenant, F.W. Woolworth Co., this building at 1037 Park Street in the historic 5-Points shopping district of Jacksonville has been the home of numerous businesses since it first showed up in the city directory listings in 1928. Pearl Plaza, 1950’s

“This was one of the new and big shopping malls in Jacksonville during the early 50’s. As you can see the A&P store was the major store.  The Place is still there but it doesn’t look like that today.  This is on Pearl and 42nd. Streets.”  LS The Pearl Plaza is still standing on the 5200 […]

Kress 5&10 cent store can be seen […]

“This is the way the Woolworth Store looked like just before it opened (note the sign in the windows).  The J.C. Penny store had not moved in.  This was on the corner of Monroe and Hogan Streets.  This was 1954.”  LS The window signs advertise for the Grand Opening, Wednesday 9 O’Clock, March 23rd.  The […]

No Springs Honest Weight

“This was the scales in the old Jax Meat Market.  Wilson’s Corned Beef Hash, 2lb. can was 29 cents.  This was another promotion deal.” LS Another image from a photo shoot for the Jax Meat Co. grocery store, “The Worlds Most Amazing Food Market” according to their own self promotion.  I really wonder how many […]

Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco

Looks like a 50’s era convenience store but I can’t find any signage with the business name.  It is across the street from an A&P Food Store.  I’d say they were really pushing the Lucky Strike cigarette brand!

Cohen Brothers, 1950’s

A late 1950’s view of the St. James Building as the Cohen Brothers department store.  This Henry Klutho masterwork was completed Oct. 21, 1912 (making it 100 years old this year) and originally housed retail space on the lower floors and office space on the upper floors. It was the largest building in Jacksonville occupying […]
