This is another of photographer Virgil Deane’s images showing a classroom at one of the schools at Jacksonville’s beaches in what appears to be a warmer than usual day judging by the open jalousie windows and the relaxed dress code. None of the photographs I have of Virgil Deane’s work have any caption information so if you can help identify the school or any of the people in the photograph please share the information and I will update the post accordingly.

I had almost forgotten that it was not uncommon for boys to go “shirtless” and “shoeless” back in the ’50s in the classroom. Notice, that all the girls were wearing dresses. It was “taboo” for a girl to wear shorts or even jeans to the school where I attended. My have times changes… and for the worse.
My family, mom and dad and five kids of which i was the oldest stayed at Ryan Sea Home for 30 days to enjoy the beach. While there, my brother Bobby and I attended this summer school. if you lived on the beach, it was all right to walk the beach and end up at the school barefooted! My aunt from Macon, Ga. came down to visit. While she sat on the porch facing the beach rocking her chair, her remark was: “Look at them waves. They even come in when the wind is not blowing!”
