Building Boom

One of the numerous incarnations of this particular block of downtown Jacksonville over the years.  This was probably for the construction of old Robert Meyer Hotel, the Woolworth and J.C. Penney buildings.  The site currently hosts the Federal Courthouse Complex.

Woolworth’s and Penney’s – yes. Robert Meyer, no – the RM was on the site of the parking lot to the left (west) of the stores. The tall building is the old Independent Life Building (before they moved to Bay Street). After Independent Life moved, the JEA was in the building for a few years. Has been vacant for several years.

Jim, Thanks for the info. I was referring to the entire block, not just the construction site. I covered the implosion of the Robert Meyer hotel in 1998 with a crew of fellow staffers from the Florida Times-Union. We placed remote cameras on the surrounding buildings including the JEA building, the Ed Ball Building and the Skyway station. It was an amazing site to see it come down in such a tight space with little damage (other than a lot of dust) to surrounding buildings.
