I like the way the Democrat Headquarters on 124 W. Bay Street was tucked between the Thom McAn Shoe Store and Andy’s Billiards. Adlai Stevenson was the Democratic presidential candidate, running against Republican candidate Dwight D. Eisenhower who won in a landslide ending 20 years of a Democratic leadership in the White House. Eisenhower’s running mate was Richard Nixon.

Wasn’t Bay Street where the “ladies of the night” used to ply their trade?
Florida Democrats realized they were not the only players in the game in the 1952 General Election. I believe Eisenhower could have ran as an Independent in 1952 and would have still have won. People were tired of the Democrats (at least nationally) and of the possibility of a 3rd term for Truman. They were ready for anyone who wasn’t a national Democrat and Eisenhower was the man who rose to the hour.
