Retro Belly Dancing

An unidentified belly dancer in an unknown club.  One of two photographs taken in the same establishment from an album of Loyd Sandgren’s titled simply “Girls.”  Shot in the late 1960’s or early 1970’s.  Very hip looking integrated crowd.  The psychedelic posters on the walls add so much to the decor.

Men With Guns, 1945

This is another frame from a series of photographs showing a Group of congressmen at the NAS Jacksonville range according to Loyd Sandgren’s notes.  Dated 10/15/45.  Again, I think this was probably from the Naval Air Gunnery School at Yellow Water.  Here is an additional photo on the pistol range of the third gentleman from the […]

Trio Of Borum Boats On The St Johns River

A nice action photo of three boats from Jacksonville’s Borum Boat Company in formation as they skim the surface of the St Johns River.  These wood runabouts had great lines and borrowed their distinctive fins from the cars of the late 1950’s when these boats were being made.  You can find more information about Borum […]

Duke It Out

No information left behind by Loyd Sandgren but judging from the audience this was a Navy boxing match, probably from the 1940’s.  Safe to say this was not the heavyweight division.  Looks like they could use a little meat on their bones.

Gator Weight Lifter, 1960’s

This is a photo from a group of Loyd Sandgren’s photographs that Olympic Weight Lifter Joe Dube‘ shared with me from his personal collection.  He said that teams from around the state used to travel and compete in the 1960’s and this was one of the lifters from The University of Florida.  He’s got the […]

Air Conditioned Veggies, 1940’s

“This picture was taken at the farmers market on West Beaver Street.  It was taken for the Bing Company, the sign tells it all.  40’s.” LS This was about the same time that window unit air conditioners first started becoming available to cool homes.  I really don’t want to think about life in Florida before […]

Olympic Weightlifter Joe Dube’ Sr.

I recently had the privilege of meeting Joe Dube’ Sr. who won a Bronze Medal as a Heavyweight Weightlifter in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.  Dube’ grew up and trained in Jacksonville setting records as a Junior Weightlifter before setting his sights on the Olympics. I showed him this particular photo that Loyd Sandgren had […]
