1960’s Jacksonville Skyline

Looking at the Jacksonville skyline from an elevated position on the old Prudential building with the first Acosta Bridge in the foreground and an earlier incarnation of the boat ramp and Friendship park in the lower right of the frame. This was taken after the Lobster House restaurant was demolished and the building that now […]

A Pirate’s Life

One of Loyd Sandgren’s commercial clients was a company that made floating rafts that they marketed as docks, floating islands and in this case an outboard motor powered pirate ship.  There are a number of photos in the collection showing the various uses and they all appear to have been shot on Lake Marco in […]

West Bay Street, 1952

“1952.  A street scene on Bay Street between Laura and Hogan.  The Democrats were running Stevenson and Sparkman.  You are looking West Northwest.  Note the Earle, Mayflower and Seminole Hotels.  The Casino theater at that time was nine cents. Some difference in it today.” LS I like the way the Democrat Headquarters on 124 W. […]

City Core, 1950’s

Looking West down West Monroe Street towards Hemming Park and the Federal Courthouse.  The multistory building sticking up from the block of buildings to the right is the Western Union building which now houses the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville.  The rest of the buildings in that block were demolished to make way for the […]

Here is an additional view of the riverfront City Hall building shortly before it was opened in 1960.  It gives you a peak around the right side of the building before the riverfront bulkhead was built and the area filled in.  It also gives you a look at the facade of the building with the […]

Downtown Grid

Looking straight down on the Eastern side of downtown Jacksonville with Main Street being the top street running from one side of the frame to the other and Duval Street dividing the frame in half top to bottom.  I’m guessing this is from the mid 1950’s although I can’t really see the cars to give […]

Fresh Off The Boat

A Volkswagen Beetle is offloaded to the pier along the Talleyrand docks, most likely headed to Brundage Motors’ dealership in Jacksonville, FL.  Brundage was the first importer of the German made autos to Jacksonville in the 1950’s.

Going Up

Topping off the Independent Square building which was completed in 1974.  An earlier version of the building’s construction can be seen here.  The building just underwent it’s latest name change with the Wells Fargo logo added to the top of the building which is now named the Wells Fargo Center.

Riverfront Parking

Newly cleared of docks and warehouses jutting into the river from Jacksonville’s Northbank along the St. Johns River the 1950’s waterfront now featured a seawall, fill and a fresh asphalt to create a parking lot just South of the Main Street Bridge.  The Jacksonville Landing now occupies part of this property.

Office Park

“This is the Tourist and Convention office in 1948.  It was built in Hemming Park downtown.  Note all the great palm trees, it was great.” LS
