Loyd Sandgren’s Christmas Present, 1953

“In 1953 my friends gave me this photo for Christmas, my daughter Carolyn helped me display it.”  LS If you don’t get everything you want for Christmas, may you at least get what you really need. Merry Christmas from Vintage Jacksonville and best wishes for the new year.  Bob Self/Vintage Jacksonville

Driver Bill Bencker With Porsche 904

This photo is another gem from the Loyd Sandgren collection. This is driver Bill Bencker, who drove for Brundage Motor Cars which later became Brumos with a rare Porsche 904. Just over 100 904’s were made specifically for racing in 1964-1965, Porsche’s first car with a fiberglass body. I wanted to know if there was more to learn […]

Dark and Foggy Night

“Here is a picture of me standing in front of my 1957 Plymouth in a foggy night, with the headlights and streetlights on. This was on Laura and Waterfront, now where the landing is today.”  LS During a recent session of scanning images from Loyd Sandgren’s collection I came across this print that I didn’t […]

Hope Haven Chocolate Bunny

“Here was a great display and very tasty.  This was a 50 pound bunny rabbit, given to the children at the hospital.  It was very hot that day so we got all the people in place, and then rushed the candy in the sun.  The few minutes it took to take the picture, it was […]

Lights, Camera, Action!

This is another behind the scenes image from the film shoot shown in San Marco shown in this previous post.  It looks like a different angle on the same setup judging by the sidewalk and driveway toward the back of the car.

Party Time!

Bobbing for apples photographed by beaches photographer Virgil Deane. This wonderful image was one of several hundred loose and un-captioned prints that were given to me after they were saved from the curb awaiting garbage pickup. I wish there were more details that could be shared. Perhaps some of the partiers are still around and […]

Borum Boat Building

On the factory floor of Borum Boats. The Jacksonville boat builder made wonderful wooden recreational boats starting in 1954 and Loyd Sandgren did much of their photography work, on land and in the water.  According to the information that I have found they started manufacturing their boats in the old Ford Model A factory building […]

Veteran’s Funeral

Sadly there is no information on this photograph which appears to be a veteran’s coffin on display in a family’s home. Flowers crowd the small room and “My Buddy” is written on one flower display’s ribbon. Two portraits of the deceased are in view.  One sits atop the 48 star flag that shrouds the coffin. […]

GE TV Delivery

“When the Robert Meyer Hotel was built, the G.E. Company sold them all their TVs, the salesman was the center man.”  LS The Robert Meyer Hotel had its groundbreaking July 9, 1957 in downtown Jacksonville. Opening in 1959 it was claimed to be Florida’s largest commercial hotel with 563 guest rooms to host business travelers […]

Lakewood Bound

The Lakewood bound City Coach Lines bus picks up its fur shawl wrapped, high heeled passenger in this staged 60’s vintage photograph by Loyd Sandgren.  There are a number of photographs in the Sandgren collection shot for the city and Greyhound bus lines from that era in Jacksonville.  Different time different fashion.
