More Women’s Wrestling action by photographer Loyd Sandgren shot in the arena located at Main Street and Beaver Street. The details of the crowd, seen better in the enlargement below are fascinating. The men’s straw hats, cigarettes being smoked. Then there is something about the guy sitting in the right of the frame with the mustache […]

This is not the best image technically from Loyd Sandgren’s professional wrestling images but the note Loyd attached to the original print was too good not to share. “Here was one girl throwing another one like she was light as a feather. Names I don’t remember but I sure remember the fights. They were good […]

A women’s wrestling match inside what looks like the old Arena located at Main Street and Beaver Street. There are a good number of sailors in their dress white uniforms mixed in with the local crowd in the stands. Great banners and flags hanging from the rafters including a 48 star United States flag which […]

Update on this previously posted photo: This is not The Great Malenko as the note with the print led me to believe but after a heads up by Vintage Jacksonville viewer LP Steve who is obviously more knowledgeable about vintage professional wrestling than I am, it looks like it it actually Jose “El Grand” Lothario. […]

Another wonderful frame of sports promoter Jimmy Murdock’s Car, this time with Men’s Wrestling Promotion Signs. 1950’s. On the corner of Main Street and Beaver Street in downtown Jacksonville. This would pair nicely with this previously posted image printed large, framed and hung in a special place in your home or office. Just a thought…

I know the guy on the left is professional wrestler Hiro Matsuda but I can’t identify the wrestler he is tangled up with during a match in the old Jacksonville Coliseum. Let me know if you can help identify the other wrestlers in the photograph. I’m sure someone out there has encyclopedic knowledge of professional […]

“Eddie Graham, weight 240lbs. and his wrestling partner Haystacks Calhoun, weight about 603 lbs. One night we went out to Beach Road Chicken Dinners and Haystacks ate 20 chickens. In fact TV 4 came out and took some pictures of him with all the chicken bones about 15 inches high. We went out to a […]

Women’s wrestling from the late 1940’s or early 1950’s inside the arena at Main and Beaver Streets that promoter Jimmy Murdock used for a variety of events before moving into the Jacksonville Coliseum. The young lady doing the throwing can also be found in this previously posted portrait by photographer Loyd Sandgren.

“If you knew Jimmy Murdock you would know his old car that he would advertise all the events that he would promote in the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.” LS Miss Ella Phillips vs Miss Mars Bennett at the Arena at Main and Beaver Streets. Best 2 out of 3 falls, 1 hour time limit. […]
