Ringside Action

More Women’s Wrestling action by photographer Loyd Sandgren shot in the arena located at Main Street and Beaver Street.  The details of the crowd, seen better in the enlargement below are fascinating.  The men’s straw hats, cigarettes being smoked.  Then there is something about the guy sitting in the right of the frame with the mustache [...]

Women In The Ring, Main Street Arena

A women’s wrestling match inside what looks like the old Arena located at Main Street and Beaver Street.  There are a good number of sailors in their dress white uniforms mixed in with the local crowd in the stands.  Great banners and flags hanging from the rafters including a 48 star United States flag which [...]

McLanahan Amoco Daytime View

Another photo from the Loyd Sandgren Collection of the McLanahan Amoco Service station located at Main Street and Beaver Street.  A couple recognizable buildings peak up from the downtown skyline.  I particularly like the advertising sign on the wall to the left. The billboard has a particular connection to me although it predates me by [...]

Procession Mystery

These two photos were in one of the albums of Loyd Sandgren’s prints with no information and I had nothing but a hunch that they were shot at the same event. I focused my attention on trying to find information on the photograph of the procession and my detective work begin.  I showed the image [...]

“This picture was taken at the farmers market on West Beaver Street.  It was taken for the Bing Company, the sign tells it all.  40’s.” LS This was about the same time that window unit air conditioners first started becoming available to cool homes.  I really don’t want to think about life in Florida before [...]

The Teen Years, Weightlifter Joe Dube’

When I first made contact with Joe Dube’ he told me that after Loyd Sandgren passed away someone delivered an envelope of photographic prints to him at his office in the Independent Life building from Loyd.  There was only one print of Joe that I have seen in the roughly 15,000 images in the Sandgren [...]

Action! Thrills! Excitement!

Another wonderful frame of sports promoter Jimmy Murdock’s Car, this time with Men’s Wrestling Promotion Signs. 1950′s.  On the corner of Main Street and Beaver Street in downtown Jacksonville.  This would pair nicely with this previously posted image printed large, framed and hung in a special place in your home or office.  Just a thought…

Women Wrestling Throw Down

Women’s wrestling from the late 1940′s or early 1950′s inside the arena at Main and Beaver Streets that promoter Jimmy Murdock used for a variety of events before moving into the Jacksonville Coliseum.  The young lady doing the throwing can also be found in this previously posted portrait by photographer Loyd Sandgren.

McLanahan Amoco

“Here is the famous McLanahan Amoco Service Station on the corner of Beaver and Main Streets.  At that time (in the 50’s) US 17, US 1 and 90 crossed that section.  They sold 50,000 gallons of gas a month there.  It was open 24 hours a day and gave great service.” LS The painted window [...]
