One Stop Shopping At The Firestone Store

Shopping was sure simpler in a store like this which appears to be a Firestone branded home and hardware store.  They had Firestone bicycles, outboard motors, paint and auto supplies.  They also sold sporting goods, books (Bibles for $1.00 and Fiction, Biography and Self Help for 49 cents) and luggage.  There are even dolls lined […]

IBM Proof Machines, 1950’s

There is no information with this photo but the little sign in the upper right corner led me to what looks like the IBM 803 Proof Machine.  According to information from a site with information on vintage IBM equipment this was used to “sort, list, prove and endorse checks, sales tickets, vouchers and other business […]

Ring It Up

Loyd Sandgren did not leave any information on this image of the cash register girl at and unknown business so you are on your own on this one.  She has a great smile and a great dress but what is with the guy wearing the headphones behind her?

Where Is She Now?

The staff of Florida Bonded Pools on Beach Blvd. circa early 1960’s in front of the business and their wonderful sign of world famous swimmer and movie star Esther Williams in all of her 30 foot tall glory.  I stopped by the business to find out more about the sign and had a great conversation […]

Main Street, 1950

Quite a few years ago Loyd Sandgren gave me an autographed print of this image with the following type written note scotch taped to the front of the print: “I took this picture in 1950 for the C.H. Brown Camera Store.  This photo was taken from the Main Street Bridge looking North.  It was first […]

Bono’s Bar-B-Que, 1954

“The day that Lou Bono’s Bar-B-Que opened up on 4907 Beach Blvd.  I remember what Lou said that day, “I paid too much for that land, it was $75.00 a front foot, I guess I’ve lost all my money.”  Today that property is worth $2,000 a front foot.  O yes, that was 750 feet deep, […]

Film-A-Record

Remington Rand’s San Marco Blvd. window display in the early 1950’s advertising it’s new data storage technology Film-A-Record.  This technology made film based copies of printed documents to reduce record storage space (think microfilm at the library).  The poster at the right of the image shows 160 four drawer file cabinets full of documents that […]

A Pirate’s Life

One of Loyd Sandgren’s commercial clients was a company that made floating rafts that they marketed as docks, floating islands and in this case an outboard motor powered pirate ship.  There are a number of photos in the collection showing the various uses and they all appear to have been shot on Lake Marco in […]

City Core, 1950’s

Looking West down West Monroe Street towards Hemming Park and the Federal Courthouse.  The multistory building sticking up from the block of buildings to the right is the Western Union building which now houses the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville.  The rest of the buildings in that block were demolished to make way for the […]

Florida Fishing Tackle Manufacturing Company, 1946

Two young ladies with flowers in their hair and a whole lot of fishing lures. There are several photos in the Loyd Sandgren Collection shot at the Florida Fishing Tackle Manufacturing Company (Barracuda Brand) in St. Petersburg, FL which would have been shot in 1946 when he was working for the state out of Tallahassee, […]
