This is a wonderful photograph of women’s basketball but photographer Loyd Sandgren left no clue as to the identities of the teams, the location or the date of the photograph. Sailors use their down time to play volleyball at Naval Station Mayport during the 1940’s. Loyd Sandgren was stationed there as the base photographer from 1942 to 1945.

According to Loyd’s notes this was shot on Sanders Field at Mayport Naval Station in 1943 during the time he was stationed there as a Navy photographer. The fielding team has Gibbs on their jersey. I can’t read the base runners.
