Volleyball 1940’s

Sailors use their down time to play volleyball at Naval Station Mayport during the 1940’s.  Loyd Sandgren was stationed there as the base photographer from 1942 to 1945.

Basketball Tall

No Nike’s here.  They were cool before they knew it was cool to wear Chuck Taylor All-Stars. “This is the tall and the short of it, two youngsters looking up to the 7 foot 4 inch Miami basketball player.  This was taken in the Coliseum in Jacksonville, Florida. 1962.” LS

Mayport Naval Station Baseball 1943

According to Loyd’s notes this was shot on Sanders Field at Mayport Naval Station in 1943 during the time he was stationed there as a Navy photographer.  The fielding team has Gibbs on their jersey. I can’t read the base runners.
