Prudential Parking Lot, Early 1950’s

“This Picture was taken from the Prudential Insurance Building showing the big parking lot and the need for a parking garage.  This picture was taken in the 50’s.  Note top center on San Marco, The Royal Crown Bottling plant.  The Fuller Warren Bridge Ramp looks brand new.  Some difference today.”  LS This image appears […]

Muntz TV Gator Bowl Float

“A Gator Bowl Parade of the 50’s and as you can see it was the float of the Muntz TV, which was nation wide at that time.  This was on Julia St. in front of the George Washington Hotel (Rainbow Room, the night club).”  LS

Looking East From Lynch Building, 1970

“A scene looking East towards Arlington.  The year was 1970.”  LS Great early 70’s view of the far East edge of downtown Jacksonville shot from an upper floor of the Lynch Building looking over the roof of the old downtown library.  This predates the Police Memorial Building but the lot in the back right of the […]

Florida Barber College On Park Street, 1970’s

The Florida Barber College located on Park Street just West of King Street in the 1970’s.  According to Wayne Wood’s book Jacksonville’s Architectural Heritage, the Art Deco structure was built in 1941 as the Orange State Oil Company Service Station.  The building is now the home of the European Street Cafe.

“This is a picture of a ship that was loading up with equipment to be shipped overseas to Vietnam for the war effort.  Shortly after this picture was taken they asked me to go on this concrete cube (about 5 feet) to get a picture looking towards the ship.  I did and after I got […]

Jacksonville’s Downtown Core, 1955

“This picture was taken from the Mayflower Hotel looking East to Northeast.  Almost all the buildings you see in this picture have been torn down.  The first street you can see in the foreground is Hogan.  About 1955.”  LS Actually quite a few of the buildings in the upper left half of the photograph are […]

Greyhound Ticket Window

A transaction taking place at the ticket window of the Greyhound Bus station in downtown Jacksonville.  I’d place this photograph from the late 1940’s or early 1950’s and it was probably the Bay and Hogan Street location which predated the current Greyhound station downtown.  Great informational signage.

Levy’s Store At Corner of Adams and Hogan, 1960’s

“The Levy’s store in downtown Jacksonville, 1955. Note on the right was the Kodak store, the tall building on the right was the Greenleaf Building.  All buildings still stand but all the names and businesses have changed.”  LS Judging by the station wagon on Adams Street I would say this is more likely the 1960’s […]

Downtown Parking, 1950’s

“Here is a picture of where the Windsor Hotel was.  Today, the bottom right is where the Ball Building is.  The big parking lot is where the Woolworth Store is and also on the left is where the Robert Meyer Hotel stands.  The middle left is where the city Electric Building is, it was the […]

Heavy Lifting At Beach Bandshell

This is another photo by Loyd Sandgren that he took of Jacksonville’s Olympic Weightlifter Joe Dube’ putting on a demonstration for a crowd at the old bandshell at Jacksonville Beach.  Probably shot in the 1960’s.  This was from a group of photographs owned by Joe Dube’ that were shot by Sandgren who covered Dube’ before […]
