Atlantic Bank Building

“This was the brand new Atlantic Bank Building, on the corner of Forsyth and Hogan Streets.  The old Atlantic Building in the background.  On the left is the store Furchgott’s.  About 1956.” LS This view of the building’s facade is now obscured by the elevated skyway tracks that travel along Hogan Street.

Above San Marco, 1940′s

Looking North towards downtown Jacksonville from over San Marco.  Late 1940′s.  Notice the cleared field where the original Prudential Building and Baptist Hospital were later built.  No I-95 overpass complex.  Things have changed a bit in the years since then…

Building Boom

One of the numerous incarnations of this particular block of downtown Jacksonville over the years.  This was probably for the construction of old Robert Meyer Hotel, the Woolworth and J.C. Penney buildings.  The site currently hosts the Federal Courthouse Complex.

Looking Down On Downtown

“Aerial photograph showing a portion of the business area of Jacksonville, Fla., on January 10, 1951.  In the middle foreground opposite the tall St. Johns  Apartment Building will be seen the site of the new Federal Reserve Branch Bank Building of Jacksonville, Florida, then under construction.  You can see Hemming Park near the middle of [...]

The Jacksonville skyline with an undeveloped Southbank in the foreground. The Main Street Bridge was only 7 years old when this photo was taken and was one of only two auto bridges across the St. Johns River to downtown.  The other bridge was the old Acosta Bridge. “This photo shows what the Southside of Jacksonville [...]
