Jose “El Grand” Lothario Ready For Action

Update on this previously posted photo:  This is not The Great Malenko as the note with the print led me to believe but after a heads up by Vintage Jacksonville viewer LP Steve who is obviously more knowledgeable about vintage professional wrestling than I am, it looks like it it actually Jose “El Grand” Lothario. […]

Air Conditioned Veggies, 1940’s

“This picture was taken at the farmers market on West Beaver Street.  It was taken for the Bing Company, the sign tells it all.  40’s.” LS This was about the same time that window unit air conditioners first started becoming available to cool homes.  I really don’t want to think about life in Florida before […]

The Teen Years, Weightlifter Joe Dube’

When I first made contact with Joe Dube’ he told me that after Loyd Sandgren passed away someone delivered an envelope of photographic prints to him at his office in the Independent Life building from Loyd.  There was only one print of Joe that I have seen in the roughly 15,000 images in the Sandgren […]

Olympic Weightlifter Joe Dube’ Sr.

I recently had the privilege of meeting Joe Dube’ Sr. who won a Bronze Medal as a Heavyweight Weightlifter in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.  Dube’ grew up and trained in Jacksonville setting records as a Junior Weightlifter before setting his sights on the Olympics. I showed him this particular photo that Loyd Sandgren had […]

No Springs Honest Weight

“This was the scales in the old Jax Meat Market.  Wilson’s Corned Beef Hash, 2lb. can was 29 cents.  This was another promotion deal.” LS Another image from a photo shoot for the Jax Meat Co. grocery store, “The Worlds Most Amazing Food Market” according to their own self promotion.  I really wonder how many […]

Jet Boats

This looks like a pair of early Jet boats.  I can’t place the make or model but from the research I did it looks like consumer jet boats came out in the early 1960’s and there were quite a few companies producing them.  Any help out there with this?

Infrared Skyline View, 1953

An infrared image shot by photographer Loyd Sandgren of the downtown skyline from the South bank of the St. Johns River at the location of the present day boat ramp and River City Brewing Company.  1953.  Infrared images were shot with a special film sensitive to the infrared light spectrum.  It had to be handled […]

Borum Boat With Navy Jets

A Borum Eldorado sits on its trailer next to what I believe is a Grumman F-9 Cougar Navy Jet and a mix of other aircraft in the background.  I don’t know which base it was shot at but I’m guessing NAS Jacksonville in the 1950’s.  (As always, I welcome information from those of you in […]

Action! Thrills! Excitement!

Another wonderful frame of sports promoter Jimmy Murdock’s Car, this time with Men’s Wrestling Promotion Signs. 1950’s.  On the corner of Main Street and Beaver Street in downtown Jacksonville.  This would pair nicely with this previously posted image printed large, framed and hung in a special place in your home or office.  Just a thought…

Prudential And Baptist Buildings Going Up

“The Baptist Hospital & The Prudential Buildings being built.  You can see downtown Jacksonville in the background.”  LS Both the Baptist Hospital and The Prudential Insurance buildings opened in 1955 so this photograph would have been taken a year or so prior.
