Restaurant Inside Lane-Rexall Drug Store

“I think this store was the Lane-Rexall Drug Store on Main & Forsyth Streets.  This was a good place to eat and they did a thriving business in the 50’s and 60’s. “  LS I believe Loyd was correct.  This image was probably shot in the late 1940’s or early 1950’s when Loyd Sandgren was […]

“Homer A. Rodeheaver, (with trombone).  He was a publisher and writer of over 1,000 religious songs.  He was a great showman also, he was a preacher also.  This picture was taken here in Jacksonville in 1948.”  LS According to his obituary from December 19, 1955 in the Warsaw Times-Union Homer Rodeheaver was born October 4, […]

Crowd At Miss Jacksonville Contest, 1954

“Here is a picture of the crowd at the Miss Jacksonville Contest of 1954.  The contest was held in the Palace Theatre.  Note the young photographer near center.  People were pretty well dressed compared with today.”  LS Anyone recognize the young photographer wielding the Speed Graphic in the crowd?

Missile On Parade

I have always loved this image from the Loyd Sandgren collection as a documentary image despite not having any information about the specifics of the shot.  Great parade float from the 1950’s, military missiles during the cold war with Russia, beautiful girl in her Southern Bell formal gown passing spectators in a house dating from […]

Bags Packed And Ready To Go

I have not figured out if this is an advertising photo for luggage or a portrait of an airline stewardess shot by Loyd Sandgren in his downtown Jacksonville studio.  Loyd did not leave any clues with this one.  Anyone recognize the logos on the uniform?

IBM Proof Machines, 1950’s

There is no information with this photo but the little sign in the upper right corner led me to what looks like the IBM 803 Proof Machine.  According to information from a site with information on vintage IBM equipment this was used to “sort, list, prove and endorse checks, sales tickets, vouchers and other business […]

No Springs Honest Weight

“This was the scales in the old Jax Meat Market.  Wilson’s Corned Beef Hash, 2lb. can was 29 cents.  This was another promotion deal.” LS Another image from a photo shoot for the Jax Meat Co. grocery store, “The Worlds Most Amazing Food Market” according to their own self promotion.  I really wonder how many […]

Borum Boat With Navy Jets

A Borum Eldorado sits on its trailer next to what I believe is a Grumman F-9 Cougar Navy Jet and a mix of other aircraft in the background.  I don’t know which base it was shot at but I’m guessing NAS Jacksonville in the 1950’s.  (As always, I welcome information from those of you in […]

Celebrating The Queen’s Undergarments

A window display showing “Costumes & Corsetry from Elizabeth I to Elizabeth II from the Formfit Collection of Historical Figurines” according to the sign behind the dolls of various queens and their undergarments.  I’m sure Queen Elizabeth II would approve of the label under her figurine, “Majesty, youth, beauty and glamor combine themselves in this […]

Ring It Up

Loyd Sandgren did not leave any information on this image of the cash register girl at and unknown business so you are on your own on this one.  She has a great smile and a great dress but what is with the guy wearing the headphones behind her?
