Mr. Abood And His Meat

An obviously proud Mr. Abood with a batch of award winning sides of beef which according to the ribbons hanging from each carcass, were purchased at the Ocala Fat Steer Show. 1950’s. This photo was circulated among members of Jacksonville’s Syrian community and they think it may be Fred Abood of the “Steer Room” and […]

US Royal Tire Showroom

No information is attached to this photo but judging from the advertising for the New Mid-Century U.S. Royal Master line of tires I think it would be safe to date the photo from about 1950.

Pork and Beans at the A&P

Among Loyd Sandgren’s clients was the A&P Grocery chain which according to conversations with Loyd, had him photograph displays at their Jacksonville store so that they could send out prints to other stores to show the way they wanted the products displayed at other locations. Anybody recognize the gentlemen in the photo?

McLanahan Amoco

“Here is the famous McLanahan Amoco Service Station on the corner of Beaver and Main Streets.  At that time (in the 50’s) US 17, US 1 and 90 crossed that section.  They sold 50,000 gallons of gas a month there.  It was open 24 hours a day and gave great service.” LS The painted window […]

Retro High Tech

“This is a storage room that held the early tapes for the computers.  In those days it was very bulky, but it was the beginning.”  LS I contacted Dag Spicer, the Senior Curator at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California for a little more information about the photo and he dated the image […]

Marineland 1946

In light of the recent purchase of Marineland by the Georgia Aquarium I thought this might be a good time to post this photo of Dolphin feeding at Marineland shot in 1946 by Loyd Sandgren.

Baptist Hospital, 1950’s

The shiny new Baptist Hospital building shortly after opening in the early 1950’s.  Only a portion of this original structure still remains as the complex grows, and that wing is scheduled to be torn down in the not too distant future.
