Building Boom

21:45H

One of the numerous incarnations of this particular block of downtown Jacksonville over the years.  This was probably for the construction of old Robert Meyer Hotel, the Woolworth and J.C. Penney buildings.  The site currently hosts the Federal Courthouse Complex.

Big Seahorse

21:31H

Anybody know what happened to the Seahorse?

Update:  Ask and you shall receive!  My friend Joan Morris in Tallahassee was quick to come up with the information on this photo.  Joan was in charge of the photographic collection at the Florida State Archives in Tallahassee for many years and now retired, still volunteers her time there.  The location was a casino on Lido Beach in Sarasota, FL which was often used for photo shoots by the Florida Department of Commerce in the 40’s and 50’s.  Loyd worked for this agency for a year in 1946 after getting out of the Navy so this would have been from his year traveling around the state before returning to Jacksonville for the rest of his career. The following are a few photos from the same location from the state photo collection.  Thanks, Joan

This Is A Volkswagen…

21:17H

A showroom vehicle advertising the line of Volkswagens which could be purchased at Jacksonville’s Brundage Motors.  The import dealer later changed hands after the death of owner Hubert Brundage and became the internationally known Brumos dealership.  Brundage was a regular client of Loyd’s.

Crosley Road Test

21:01H

There is no information with this photograph but the history of this now defunct auto marque is fascinating.  Crosley only produced cars from 1939 to 1952.  They got 50 miles per gallon and Crosley was the last company in the United States to cease production of civilian vehicles during W.W. II.

KP Duty

20:46H

Caption on back of print: Mess Cooks take eyes out of potatoes at N.A.G.S.  2/20/45
“Here is a group of men on KP duty.  The potatoes shown in the background was just part of the 5 tons used each day at the base.  They seemed to be having a good time, but I think the reason for that was because a picture was being taken of them.” LS

Contact Sheet

20:38H

As a photographer I enjoy looking at other photographer’s contact sheets.  It shows the thought process and progression of a photo shoot.  You can still do this with digital but for some reason it is just not the same.

Loyd Sandgren shot quite a bit of professional wrestling in the early 1960’s and this is a contact sheet from one roll of film.  He probably shot this with his medium format Rolleiflex camera.  What puzzles me is since it is a square format camera, why do the images keep switching from vertical to horizontal images?

Looking Down On Downtown

“Aerial photograph showing a portion of the business area of Jacksonville, Fla., on January 10, 1951.  In the middle foreground opposite the tall St. Johns  Apartment Building will be seen the site of the new Federal Reserve Branch Bank Building of Jacksonville, Florida, then under construction.  You can see Hemming Park near the middle of the photo.  The post office is near the center of picture.“ LS
