McLanahan Amoco

11:30H

“Here is the famous McLanahan Amoco Service Station on the corner of Beaver and Main Streets.  At that time (in the 50’s) US 17, US 1 and 90 crossed that section.  They sold 50,000 gallons of gas a month there.  It was open 24 hours a day and gave great service.” LS

The painted window sign reads ‘Engine Tune Up Points, Condenser & Plugs $12.95.’

The Artist And His Creation

11:30H

“Shown here at the entrance of the Federal Reserve Bank Building, Sculptor Gaetano Cecere showing some of his work that he did for the bank.” LS

From the Jacksonville Historical Society’s web site.  “Two large and impressive sculptures line the doorway of the Fire and Rescue Headquarters Building at 515 Julia Street. Designed by nationally renowned sculptor Gaetano Cecere, these monumental Indiana limestone panels are perhaps downtown Jacksonville’s most significant and yet overlooked works of public art.

At that time his work included 4 large marble panels which still decorate the chamber of the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., a monumental statue of Abraham Lincoln in front of the War Memorial Building in Milwaukee; a large sculpture celebrating American Womanhood for the 1939 World’s Fair; and many of the service medals for the U.S. Armed Services, including the The Distinguished Service Cross, The Distinguished Service Medal, and The Soldier’s Medal.”

This panel represents Agriculture in Florida.  The opposing panel represents Commerce and Industry in Florida.  The building with it’s impressive reliefs was dedicated in 1952.

Retro High Tech

11:25H

“This is a storage room that held the early tapes for the computers.  In those days it was very bulky, but it was the beginning.”  LS

I contacted Dag Spicer, the Senior Curator at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California for a little more information about the photo and he dated the image in the early to mid 1960’s.  He said the reels typically held up to 150 MB of information per reel.

After a rough count of 226 tapes in the photograph, giving them the maximum of 150 MB capacity per tape it works out to 33.1 Gigabytes of storage in the room.  A cheap thumb drive can handle that today.

Anyone out there have any idea where in Jacksonville this might have been?

Portrait Of Loyd Sandgren, Tallahassee, FL 1946

4:30H

This is one of my favorite photos of Loyd taken after he got out of the Navy in Jacksonville.  He went to work for the Florida State Advertising Commission in Tallahassee, FL for about a year before returning to Jacksonville where he stayed the rest of his life.

“A photo of Loyd Sandgren in Tallahassee, FL in 1946, by Morris Monts de Oca, a photographer for the Florida State Advertising Commission. The man in the house next door was very friendly and he said to me one day, ‘before the war I bought the paint and brushes to paint this house, but the war came along and no one would paint it for me.’  Then he said ‘The house looked so bad that I decided to have it painted, then the second World War broke out, so I guess I’ll wait a while before painting it.'” LS

Damaged In Transit

11:30H

“A Bad Accident.  No one was killed and no one was hurt, no one had seat belts on either.  It all happened on a trip from England to Jacksonville, Florida.  These cars were on a ship and they got into a bad storm.  Result, the cars broke away from their chains and bounced together and it was a complete total, all 150 cars.”  LS

They just need a little body work, a fresh coat of paint… Is that an Austin-Healey at the bottom of the frame?

Marineland 1946

10:30H

In light of the recent purchase of Marineland by the Georgia Aquarium I thought this might be a good time to post this photo of Dolphin feeding at Marineland shot in 1946 by Loyd Sandgren.

Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce Gator Bowl parade float passing by the old Federal Courthouse building ahead of the December 31, 1955 match up between Auburn and Vanderbilt in the Gator Bowl.  Vanderbilt won that one 25 to 13. It was Auburn’s third year in a row to be in the Gator Bowl beating Baylor the year before and loosing to Texas Tech the year before that.

5-Points Christmas Party With Sal Mineo

10:00H

“Sal Mineo.  1939-1976, A great drummer and movie actor.  He is seen here at 5-Points making a public appearance in 1957.   As you can see, a big crowd of fans were there to see him.  I had a black beard at the time.” LS

Photo is dated December 21. 1957.  For some reason I find the black beard part of Loyd’s note very important. Sign over theatre doorway reads “Sal Mineo, Star of ‘Rock, Pretty Baby'”.

Baptist Hospital, 1950’s

10:00H

The shiny new Baptist Hospital building shortly after opening in the early 1950’s.  Only a portion of this original structure still remains as the complex grows, and that wing is scheduled to be torn down in the not too distant future.
